The Medical Transportation Association of New Jersey is proud to announce its comprehensive compliance and ethics training on March 26, presented by Margaret Keavney, Esq., of Keavney & Streger, LLC.
This pivotal training session, free to MTANJ members, is designed to enhance and maintain effective ambulance compliance programs. Attendees will gain invaluable insights into the development of compliance policies and procedures, the importance of appointing a dedicated compliance officer, and the implementation of targeted education and training programs. The workshop will delve into strategies for internal monitoring and reviews, methods for responding aptly to detected misconduct, and the establishment of open lines of communication. Additionally, it will cover the enforcement of disciplinary standards through well-publicized guidelines, conduct evaluations and risk analysis, and scrutinize the claims submission process including pre-billing review, paid claims, and denials. Attendees will also explore system reviews and safeguards against sanctioned suppliers, identify and respond to specific risks such as medical necessity, upcoding, and non-emergency transports, among others, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the complexities involved in ambulance service compliance and ethics.

About Margaret Keavney, Esq.
Margaret A. Keavney, Esq., is a Member of the firm Keavney and Streger. Margaret has been involved in EMS since 1981 and has practiced law since 1993 She focuses her practice on the needs of healthcare providers and agencies, specifically for the EMS industry. Her practice includes healthcare regulatory compliance, reimbursement and payment issues, contract and RFP support, employment issues, provider licensure and credentialing, organizational governance, and support of civil and criminal litigation. She is also a NAAC Certified Ambulance Compliance Officer.
Prior to leaving for law school in 1989, Ms. Keavney worked as a paramedic at several New Jersey hospitals, and volunteered as an EMT on Englishtown-Manalapan First Aid Squad, starting out as a cadet. Margaret has also worked as an EMT providing non-emergency transports and event standbys.
Margaret obtained her Juris Doctorate and Master’s Degree in Health Administration (Health Systems Management) from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. She has represented healthcare entities, providers, and health plans for more than 25 years.
Margaret served for six years as the legal member of the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services Panel of Commissioners, evaluating applicants and approving accreditation of agencies.
Whether as a teaching assistant in graduate school health law classes, an instructor in basic EMT classes, or lecturing at EMS and legal conferences, Margaret enjoys teaching and leading discussions on the science and law of medicine, health care, and leadership.
Locally, Margaret is a longtime member of the Board of Directors for the Medical Transportation Association of New Jersey, advocating for the interests of all licensed ambulance and Mobility Assistance Vehicles providers in the state.
